Villa Sarah is located on an elivated position, in the village, in the old part of Lopud, which is the smallest of the Elphite islands, close to Dubrovnik. This lush green island with two sandy beaches is covered in orange and lemon trees. No cars are allowed which adds to the lovely ambiance of this wonderful place. The daily boat service, 5 times a day to Dubrovnik, is cheap and reliable. Back drop to villa Sarah is a high mountain with the ruin of an old fortress on top, from where the view is magnificent. A sandy beach is only a few minutes away and the second floor patio offers a lovely view of Lopud bay. The villa has vine coverd terraces and a summer kitchen with an outside barbecue. You can walk down to the harbour where there are two shops, which sell fresh bread and groceries. Along the sea front there are many bars and restaurants. After your evening swim in the sea, sit back and enjoy the perfect view of the sun setting over the island of Sipan opposite.

Changeover day
There is no preferred changeover day. We normally expect guests to leave the apartment by 12 noon and we would prefer if guests would arrive after 2 pm. However we are flexible and would accommodate our guest where ever possible.
Notes on accommodation
The airconditoning units are dual use, both heating and cooling. Free standing heaters for cool evenings available.
There are some steps leading to the villa as it is in an elivated position but compared to the rest of the village which nestles on a hill side, there are not many. The large terrace is great for children. The whole island is safe as there are no cars allowed and virtually no crime. You will not be afraid to let the kids go down to the harbour or to the beach by them selves. Our 10 year old son loves the freedom of being able to go to the local shop for an icecream or sweets by himself.
The 2 village shops and the post office provide all the essentials you might need.
Guests are met at the harbour by our housekeeper who will take you to the villa and give any help you may need to settle in. Beds changed & apartments cleaned weekly. Cleaning materials are provided for the guests to do some day to day light cleaning. Iron, hoover and hairdyer available on request.
Accessibility
As the villa is on an elivated position there are steps leading up to it so it will not be suitable for people with limited mobility or wheel chairs. Older guests can usually manage the steps as one can proceed at their own pace. My parents (74 and 75 years) had no problems, enjoyed their stay very much and felt much healthier after their holiday.
Children will not find the steps a problem and parents with buggys also mange very well.
Outside
When you enter the villa compound via the solid wood gates, guests are delighted by the the patio and the views. It is an enchanting place beautifully landscaped. There is a Large vine covered veranda with patio furniture. To your left there is the fully fitted summer kitchen complete with a large teak patio dinning table and chairs and lovely views. The kitchen has a washing machine, fridge and hob. Attached to the summer kitchen is an outside shower and a toilet. You step out of the summer kitchen on to the terrace wher there are several fruit trees, a water feature, another covered area and the out side barbecue. There are sun beds, deck chairs and more patio tables and chairs for the guests to use. There is a dedicated area to dry clothes. This entire area is communal for use of all the guests. On the second floor there is another vine covered patio which is for the guests in the second floor apartment. This sea view patio also has patio tables and chairs.
Coast/Beach
The island is tiny and the majority of the people live in houses close to the bay, which has sandy beachs along many parts of it. The beach is only 3 to 4 minutes from the house and is very safe with no currants and large waves.
20 min walk away there is another lovely sandy beach on the other side of the island, in a natural cove, which is shallow for a long way in and is a perfect place for children. This beach is famous and many tourists visit Lopud just to enjoy Sunja (Shoon) Beach.
Travel
The best way to get to Lopud is to arrive at Dubrovnik airport and take a 25 min taxi ride to the port (Gruz). Depending on boat timetable, last boat 8 pm, you can either take the state boat (Postira) or the smaller private boat NOVA. Purchase the ticket at the ticket office infront of the taxi rank for Postira, on the boat for Nova. Postira is much cheaper and you can walk around and get a drink as this is a bigger boat. Travel time 1 hr to 50 mins to Lopud, which is the second island.
Distances
In Lopud you can walk to most places in 20 to 30 mins. Sunja Beach is a must, the old fort is highly recommended and the walk to the end of the peninsula, lovely. From Lopud you can take the boat to explore the islands of Sipan and Kolochep 20 mins boat ride away or the botanical gardens in Tresteno 10 mins to the mainland opposite. A trip to Dubrobnick & a walk on the city walls is a must. From Gruz take a bus or a 5 min taxi ride. Explore island of Lokrum 10 min boat ride from Old Town.
Further details
As Lopud is tiny and only around 200 people live here all the time, the amenities suit the size of the community. During the holiday season the island comes alive, bit like the island of Capri in Italy. The population swells to 2 to 3 thousand in the season. Day trippers from Dubrovnik and the other islands nearby arrive in pleasure boats to spend the day on this lovely island. The locals come to enjoy Sunja beach in their private yatchts and small boats as lopud is a major attraction in the stylish Dubrovnik reviera.
During the season the shops are open all day and there are more souvinier shops, restaurants, cafe bars to meet the demand. In the evening after the day trippers leave, the island settles into a mellow, tranquil state and the tourist staying on the island settle down to enjoy a leasurly dinner in outside restaurants to the sound of the sea or some live music.
There is a post ofice on the island which will exchange currancy and a hole in the wall where guests can use their cards to withdraw money which is given in kuna. Very few places on the island accept cards.
There is a clinic and a doctor on the island daily during the hoilday season.
Guests may book private boats for sight seeing, or to get to the mainland, especially if you have to leave very early or arrive late and the public boat timetable do not suite. Private boats are not so expensive if you are in a party of 4 to 8 people. You can also take the private boat one way and the public one on the return journey.
Most tourists go to dubrovnik on day trips as it only takes an hour and 15 min to get there. In the season Dubrovnik is very busy, so be prepared and can get very hot. Sit on the open top deck of the postira and enjoy a packed lunch or a cold drink and beautiful views as you sail past on the hour trip to Dubrovnik.
There is much to see and do locally but if you would like to go further then take the fast boat to the island of Mijet for a day trip. Travel time over two hrs.
