Casa do Pirata is a stone’s throw from Faro and is the perfect getaway for those who want to experience the real Algarve but be close enough to all the other attractions. There is an obvious Moorish influence and many of the houses like ours have flat roofs originally used for drying almonds and figs but now making a perfect place to sunbathe or have an evening drink looking across the ancient rooftops towards the sea. No expense has been spared in renovating this stunning little house with local craftsmen seamlessly marrying the old with the modern facilities guests now expect. Intricately worked brick domed ceilings, renovated hardwood doors and exposed stone walls abound. Winding cobbled streets lead down to the waterfront markets for the freshest of ingredients or for watching the perfect sunset across the lagoon. Mins away a short ferry ride takes you to the sandspit island of Armona. A perfect car free island for the kids or fishing and beachside eating for the grown ups.

Notes on accommodation
In order to retain the wonderful original terrace further accommodation was not put on the roof. This house would ideally suit couples but would be fine for a family with a baby or 2 children looking to take advantage of the central position and the favourable rates.
We have an English house manager who will visit at some point after arrival unless you opt to purchase a meet and greet service at the house or airport. As this is an entirely new renovation we are not expecting any problems but our manager is on hand to help should any occur. IPOD dock now and free phone and internet from 2009.
Accessibility
Like all original houses in Olhao the stairs are steep but ours have been remodelled and are better than many. There is good ambient light and wrought iron handrails to further improve the access.
Outside
There is a perfect little eating terrace off the living room with a table and chairs. From here stairs lead up to the rooftop terrace which has a charming view across the rooftops out to sea. At night you should be able to glimpse the lighthouse at Farol - warning ships on the Atlantic side of the island.
The roof terrace has folding sun loungers, a BBQ, drying facilities and separate seating. It is also fully equipped with electric points, lighting and a shower for the sun-worshippers to cool off.
Coast/Beach
Minutes walk from the house you can take a short ferry ride or a water taxi to the Island of Armona. There are no cars on the islands and both the lagoon and Atlantic side are easily accessible on foot. Off season they feel wonderfully remote but even in the summer remain unspoilt. Faro beach, an undiscovered but immense stretch of sand, is 8km west. 8km east is the resort of Fuseta and then the huge island beach off Tavira. A must is the train ride across the flats to Praia do Rey.
Golf
Arguably the best courses in Europe are less than half an hour's drive away to the west of Faro. Courses at Tavira and Moncarapacho are around 20 minutes drive.
Travel
Faro airport 8km.
Everything you need including English papers is within 10 mins walk and a car is not at all necessary. We can give you the details of someone English who will meet and greet you at the airport and transport you to Casa do Pirata if you prefer. This is extra but less than taxis. He should also be able to help you arrange daytrips.
Car hire is easy at Faro Airport and parking is nearby but not outside the house as the small cobbled street is too small to allow cars through.
Distances
If you wish to venture further afield trains from Olhao or taxis can take you to Faro where its old cobbled walkways have some good shops and the walled old town is well worth a visit.
Serious shoppers are just 8km from the chic shopping centre at Forum Algarve.
Tavira perched either side of the Ria Filao is charming and full of places to eat.
30 minutes away you will find all the trappings of the more developed side of the Algarve with karting, waterparks and marine land etc.
Further details
There are many little bakeries both in the alleyways and around the market which sell lovely freshly baked rolls and the traditional custard tarts. The market which runs 6 days a week is a foodies mecca offering you every kind of fish and shellfish straight from the sea. The adjoining sister market supplies fruit, veg and meat. Olhao is stuffed full of great places to eat many within 3-4 minutes of the house. Larger supermarkets are not much further. Newspapers, cashpoint, banks and post office are all in the centre of town where you will also find an Internet cafe.
If you are unlucky enough to have a bad weather day the large multiplex cinema in Forum Algarve shows all films in English with Portuguese subtitles.
