Casa Tapas is a modern villa with its own pool set in a good sized, well maintained garden. It is situated in the small development of Jardim da Meia Praia and is a very peaceful and private location. The villa is all on one floor with an open planned living area consisting of a well equipped kitchen (with utility room off); a large sitting/dining room with a log fire, satellite TV and patio doors leading to the terrace and swimming pool. There are three good sized bedrooms, all of which have air conditioning fitted - one en-suite with a king-size bed and two with twin beds, sharing a full bathroom. There is also a guest toilet. Outside, there is room to park two or three cars in the front, there are lawns and flower beds to the sides of the villa with terracing and a good-sized pool to the rear (south facing - so sunny most of the day). Five minutes drive can take you either to the historic town of Lagos, the long sandy beach of Meia Praia or the Palmares Golf Course.

Notes on accommodation
The villa is suitable for children, with lockable gates ensuring that the property is fully secure. A 'catch-a-kid' net is provided for the pool to keep any young children safe. An instruction DVD is provided and we insist that it is used whenever young children are unsupervised near the pool. Having a young child of our own, we are aware of the dangers posed by the swimming pool and would ask visitors with children to be vigilant. If you have small children a cot and high chair are available for a small fee.

Accessibility
Although the villa has not been constructed with the disabled in mind, its single storey design does make it easier. However, there is one step down to the pool and garden area in most places, although you can get round to the pool area without going down any steps by exiting out the front and going round the villa to the back.

Outside
There are mature, well-maintained gardens surrounding the villa, with patio areas outside the bedrooms, lounge and round the pool. There is a built-in barbecue and an outdoor shower. The pool is 10x5m with steps leading into it from one end. Sun loungers, chairs and tables are provided, with a large table for outdoor dining. A large parasol is also provided.

Coast/Beach
Meia Praia 5 mins drive or 20 mins walk, is a beautiful sandy beach stretching 6km from Lagos to the mouth of the Alvor river. Bars and restaurants are dotted along the beach offering excellent food and a number of water activities are also available. Other beaches around Lagos are flanked by cliffs, giving the picture postcard scenery associated with the Algarve's coastline. Lagos Marina is the place to organise boat trips, dolphin watching, deep sea fishing and diving.

Golf
At the last count there were 22 golf complexes, 35 separate courses and over 585 widely differing holes to play along the Algarve. Those closest to Casa Tapas are: Palmares 5 mins drive is best known for its breathtaking scenery. The setting is idyllic, with the majority of the 18 holes on gentle slopes above the extensive Meia Praia beach. Penina 15 mins drive. 18 holes Championship Course (plus two 9 hole courses). Long flat course with lakes trees and bunkers. Boavista 15 mins drive. This 18 holes course has panoramic views towards Praia da Luz, out over Lagos Bay and beyond. Parque Da Floresta (30 minutes drive). This 18 holes course is located amongst rolling, hilly terrain. Because of this most of the holes, especially on the first 9, are testing. Vilamoura with its 6 courses is 45 minutes drive.

Travel
Faro airport is approx 50 mins drive, mainly on the A22 motorway (driving directions will be provided). A car is recommended as it is a fair walk to the town (uphill on the way back). All major car rental companies are represented at Faro airport, plus a number of local companies which can be cheaper. The train service from Faro Town to Lagos takes about 2 hours. You will need a taxi to get from the airport to the station. Taxis from the airport to Lagos cost between 75 and 90 euros.

Distances
A car is really essential for getting to the picturesque towns and villages in the area, such as Monchique, Silves, Sagres, Cape St Vincent, etc. and it is lovely to drive around and see the oranges on the trees, or the spectacularly rugged west coast. Very few places of interest are more than an hours drive (unless you want to venture further afield to Lisbon or Seville).

Further details
Lagos has an abundance of restaurants and bars and there are a number of excellent supermarkets on the outskirts of town. Many people consider Lagos the most likeable town on the Algarve coast. The ancient walls are steeped in history, but nowadays this is a youthful town, with a refreshing, relaxed charm all of its own. The main part of the town has been pedestrianised and you can wander around the shops, cafes, restaurants and bars, taking in the relaxed atmosphere. For a bit more hustle and bustle, visit the new fish market which is open each morning.

If you like history then there is plenty to see including the old city walls, the fort, the slave market, the museum and the Church of Santo Antonio. A walk along the treelined waterfront promenade and over the footbridge brings you to the marina with its shops, bars and restaurants, where you can sit supping cocktails and looking out at the sailing boats and gin palaces moored there. Alternatively you can stroll round to the fishing port and sample the local fish in the more basic (but good value) restaurants there. You can also get to the fabulous Meia Praia beach from here or take a ride along the coat to Faro on the train. Further afield, you can take a boat trip up the river Arade from Portimao to the pretty city of Silves with its castle and cathedral. Look out for the birdlife on the way as the Algarve has an abundance of interesting birds, including Bee-eaters, Storks and even Flamingoes.

If you are into ancient history or archaeology, then visit the Neolithic settlement at Alcalar or the Roman ruins near Penina. There are so many things to do in the Algarve - something for everybody. Why not consider horse riding, Jeep safaris, water parks, Lagos Zoo, Sand City (sand sculptures, from 22 May to 22 October), Zoo marine park, the Algarve Shopping Centre at Guia, Cliff Richards vinyard, the spa at Caldas de Monchique or just a nice walk along the clifftops or in the pretty countryside inland.

Booking notes
A 10% deposit is payable when you book, with the remainder payable 6 weeks before your arrival date. Late bookings (within 6 weeks of the start of your holiday) are payable in full at the time of booking.

Guest comments
Casa Tapas has been our family holiday home for a number of years and has been enjoyed by everyone. In fact we liked it so much that we sold our house in England and moved to the Algarve in 2007.
